Reduce what people must remember
Keep necessary context, values, requirements, and progress visible at the point of use. Do not ask users to memorize a code from one page, rules from an earlier accordion, or the meaning of unexplained icons. Break long tasks into meaningful stages and show where the person is, what remains, and whether work is saved. Use consistent terms for the same object and distinguish different objects clearly. Summaries should support recall without hiding important detail.
Make actions and consequences predictable
Use familiar patterns, specific labels, and instructions before input. Explain required formats with examples and validate without erasing completed work. Warnings should name the risk and appear before the action. Confirm destructive or high-commitment choices in a way that lets the person review consequences. Avoid sudden context changes, unexpected timeouts, auto-advancing content, and controls that move. Provide a clear route back, undo, pause, or save where the task permits.
Control distraction and time pressure
Remove animation, notifications, promotional interruptions, and competing calls to action that interfere with the primary task; support reduced-motion preferences. Explain time limits, show remaining time accessibly, and allow extension when possible. Use plain sentences while preserving necessary precision, with definitions and examples near unfamiliar concepts. Test realistic error and interruption states. A successful pass should help people resume after a pause, not merely finish under ideal conditions.

Frequently asked questions
Is plain language enough for cognitive accessibility?
No. Memory, consistency, timing, distraction, predictability, recovery, and interface behavior also shape the experience.
Should every task be broken into many screens?
Not automatically. Group steps meaningfully and let users understand progress. Excessive fragmentation can increase memory and navigation burden.
Are time limits always inaccessible?
Some limits have legitimate reasons, but they should be explained, warned about, and adjustable or extendable where possible under applicable requirements.
How should improvements be tested?
Test the full journey, including errors, interruptions, return, and assistive settings, with relevant users and specialist review.
