- Write observable acceptance evidence, blocking conditions, and examples for every dimension.
- Calibrate the draft with several real pieces and independent reviewers, then clarify areas of disagreement.
- Approve the definition, connect it to briefs and reviews, and monitor outcomes that can reveal a weak standard.
Define quality from the reader’s task
Quality begins with whether content helps the intended person understand, decide, or act safely in a real situation. Describe the task, prior knowledge, constraints, and consequence of failure. A concise status alert and an in-depth research guide require different completeness, tone, and structure. Avoid defining quality only through internal preferences such as word count, keyword density, or a favored style rule. Those may be useful production signals in context, but they do not establish that the page answered the question. Connect each dimension to an observable reader or organizational need.
Separate gates from gradations
Some requirements should block publication: a material unsupported claim, inaccessible essential information, exposed personal data, an incorrect action, or a missing mandatory approval. Other dimensions allow degrees of improvement, such as elegance, depth of examples, or consistency of voice. Label them differently so a high score in presentation cannot cancel a safety failure. For each dimension, write evidence an editor can inspect: the source actually supports the sentence, headings reveal the task sequence, links identify their destination, or the page names its limits. Include examples at the boundary between acceptable and revision-needed work.
Calibrate people and monitor outcomes
Give several reviewers the same sample without showing previous scores. Compare where they disagree and revise vague language rather than demanding identical instincts. Record the rationale for edge cases. After adoption, examine corrections, support questions, task completion, search refinements, accessibility feedback, and maintenance failures. Metrics should diagnose a dimension, not become the definition itself. A page may receive traffic while confusing its core audience, and a specialized answer may be excellent with low reach. Assign an owner and review date so the standard evolves deliberately rather than through undocumented preferences.

Frequently asked questions
Should every content type use the same quality rubric?
Keep shared principles where they genuinely apply, but adapt acceptance evidence to the reader task and risk. A crisis alert, data report, tutorial, and brand story need different depth, speed, controls, and maintenance expectations.
Is readability score a quality measure?
It can flag sentence or vocabulary patterns, but it cannot determine accuracy, usefulness, accessibility, or appropriate complexity. Use it as one diagnostic input and have a human assess whether the intended audience can understand and act.
Must every dimension receive a number?
No. Descriptive levels and pass-or-block gates often produce better discussion. Add numbers only when anchors are clear and the arithmetic does not allow a severe failure to disappear inside an average.
How can we reduce inconsistent reviewer judgments?
Use observable wording, boundary examples, and recurring calibration with the same samples. Study disagreement instead of hiding it. Some editorial judgment will remain, so record who has authority to resolve consequential edge cases.
